ISLAMIC ZAKAT LAW (Verses 2:264 -2: 265)

Assalam oalaikum,

Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran:
“O you who believe, do not render in vain your charity by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men and he does not believe in Allah and in the Last Day. His likeness is the likeness of a smooth rock on which is a little dust, on which falls heavy rain and leaves it bare. They are not able to do anything with what they have earned.   And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people” (TMQ-2:264)

This Quranic verse shows that giving charity to the needy and then reminding them about one’s generosity or hurting their sentiments does not suit the believers. This type of meanness and narrow-mindedness is the act of the disbelievers and the hypocrites who like giving charity only for show-off. This verse instructs the Muslims to avoid doing show-off in charity so that the charity does not go in vain. The kind of charity that is done only for show-off has been described in this verse using the metaphor of the smooth rock on which there is some soil. A person sows some seeds in this soil in order to produce crop but a torrent of rain washes away the soil, leaving the rock barren and clear. Just like the rain did not produce any crop in this case, similarly the hypocrite who gives charity for show-off will not be rewarded by Allah (swt). His charity will be useless for him. Allah (swt) does not guide such disbelievers.

Allah (swt) says in the Holy Quran:
“And the likeness of those who spend their wealth seeking Allah’s pleasure while they are in own self are sure certain that Allah will reward them (for their spending in His cause)  is the likeness of a garden on a height, heavy rain falls on it and it doubles its yield of harvest. And if does not receive heavy rain light rain suffices it. And Allah is All-Seer of what you do”. (TMQ-2:265)

This verse gives us an example of the believers who give zakaat, sadqah etc with the right NIyah (intention) i.e. to obtain Allah (swt)’s Goodwill. The wealth given by such virtuous and noble people in charity has been described by using the metaphor of an orchard which is situated on a high altitude. When there is a heavy rainfall the orchard produces double its yield and even if there is a drizzle, it is enough to produce a good crop in it. This implies that irrespective of how much wealth a pious person spends in charity (whether less or more), he will be rewarded for It by Allah (swt).
